GPR Investigation Completed at Kyle Log House

Hays County hired ground-penetrating radar (GPR) specialist Dr. Michael Martin of Sidekick LLC to conduct a GPR investigation of the Kyle Log House site, seeking evidence of former outbuildings and other historic features associated with the ranch—including possible locations of a detached kitchen and dwellings once occupied by enslaved people on the property.

The GPR survey of the current 0.83-acre site revealed soil imprints indicating an additional room formerly attached to the south side of the Kyle Log House, along with the probable locations of several outbuildings across the grounds. It also identified a likely wagon trail on the north side of the house.

Findings from this study will help guide the Claiborne Kyle Log House Commission as it works to enhance public access to the site while protecting areas that may warrant future archaeological investigation.
