Kyle Log House Gets a New Wood Roof
January 27, 2026
The Claiborne Kyle Log House has received a much-needed new wood roof, marking a major step in preserving the circa 1850 structure for future generations.
The previous roof was installed during a restoration in the 1980s. Four decades of exposure to weather and natural wear led to significant deterioration, leaving the building vulnerable to water infiltration.
To address these urgent preservation needs, Hays County hired On-Point Roofing of San Marcos to replace the failing roof with new, in-kind cedar shakes. Cedar shakes were selected to match the historic material and appearance of the original roof, ensuring the house’s historic character remained intact.
The project was undertaken in collaboration with Preservation Texas and carried out under permit from the Texas Historical Commission, as required due to the Kyle Log House’s designation as a State Antiquities Landmark.
The roof replacement is a significant milestone toward the Kyle Log House Commission’s goal of completing the repairs necessary to eventually reopen the house to the public.
